An insight into the world of copyright, the use of fair trade, the perception of copyright on Youtube, it’s reception upon it’s users. All culminates to – is copyright really beneficial?

In the protection of Intellectual Property (IP) then yes, it’s highly important in maintaining ownership of ideas. It still remains valid in the terms of:

  • Artists
  • Musicians
  • Writers

But what becomes damaging is the overall controlling nature that copyright infringement has developed. Digital enclosure, entailing total governance of perception/review of information, along with the DRM (Digital Rights Management) makes it impossible for creative ideas to naturally flourish.

How can we stop from copyrighting from others?

In my opinion, we can’t. Is recontextualisation copyright? If I elaborate on someone’s ideas, have I stolen their IP? I doubt if anything posted anywhere is still 100% original… aren’t we all copying each other in one form, even if we’re unaware of it?

Till next time,

Jess
