The public sphere is the ‘space’ in which citizens debate about common concerns. This can reflect from political issues, entertainment and anything regarding humanity.
Socialist theorist Jurgen Habermaas depicted the public sphere as an 18th century coffee shop, where individuals would meet and discuss important issues and common concerns of the society. With changing ideologies in contemporary society, the public sphere has shifted from a ‘coffee house’ to multiple channels of spheres. This enables individuals to participate, discuss and debate amongst multiple challenges globally.
In the public eye, there is always controversy in regards to issues of the policing of the body and the moral guidelines as a part of that. In terms of transgender, strong debate has sparked due to the beliefs of what true forms of gender identity are, if it’s a ‘real’ issue and the changing attitudes to sexuality.
Consider only Laverne Cox, actress in the widely popular Netflix series Orange Is The New Black (OITNB). The show focuses on controversial issues, in which transgender, sexuality, religion, and racism are clearly demonstrated throughout each season. With the producers of OITNB choosing to cast a real transgender to play the role, they have pushed forward recognition of the topic and discuss the discrimination when characters face adversity through becoming their true selves.
In regards to transgender, the media has remained split in two over the issue within the public sphere. Many feel as if the show, and considering further laws implemented for equal rights, “nontraditional” lifestyle and may encourage allegedly ‘normal’ kids to pursue a lifestyle otherwise not known to them because of OITNB. Members of society feel that

There is also various support for the show. Individuals have praised it for the well written, amazingly paced, and wonderfully diverse in its casting of prison guards, officials, and inmates. There is understanding and acceptance for Laverne Cox, with support for a transgender actor in this public sphere.
Overall, it must be considered that OITNB has enabled widespread discussion of transgender, provided education in the manner and raised concern to the abuse demonstrated with individuals. It can be surmised that the show has been greatly beneficial to awareness of transgender alliance.
